Movie Reviews

Alright, as I promised yesterday, movie reviews, here we go.

Vantage Point is a 2008 thrill fest. Terrorists attack Spain during an anti-terrorist summit. The President of the United States is shot and there is plenty of twists, turns and action However as the title says, it all depends on a person's point of view. You'll see the same action a few times over, from the perspective of different people, the president, a secret service man, men blackmailed into helping the terrorists, an american tourist and the terrorists themselves. It does become a bit repetitive, but the action is shot from different angles and you catch and understand stuff better as the plot thickens. It's a good movie with an unexpected ending. A good rent, and I'd say a good consideration if you're looking to buy a decent dvd. I recommend it.

Dan in Real Life is a nice 2007 a drama/romance/comedy with one of my favorite comedic actors, Steve Carell. His character is an advice columnist who is widowed for a few years, taking care of his three daughters and having to deal with their needs above his own. During a family reunion he goes out shopping and meets a woman he becomes interested in. His surprise is that when he gets back to his family, his brother introduces his girlfriend to him, the same women he met earlier. This leads to a struggle of emotions on his part, and hers. Things get complicated and his actions lead to the family falling apart. I won't go past that, because you'll want to see the rest. A good rent and a great dvd buy for anyone who likes drama, romance and a bit of comedy combined. I highly recommend it

2007's Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is one of the best thrillers I've seen. Two brothers in debt struggle with their personal and financial problems. The older one is a drug addict and has been using company funds to buy drugs while his wife is having an affair with another man. The younger brother is having a tough time keeping up with alimony payments to keep his daughter in a good school. Their desperation to fix their financial woes lead to a robbery of a jewelry store. Unfortunately things don't go as planned, and what was meant to be an easy job where nobody gets hurt, ends up with the death of two people. This leads to an unexpected series of consequences that neither brother ever expected. Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney give a superb performance and combined with a good storyline makes this a great movie to rent and a must-have dvd purchase. I highly recommend it.

When it rains, it pours...hey it's florida

Nervous

It's been years since I got a "real" job with a paycheck, so I've been waking up and going back to sleep all night. At 7AM I decided to stay up. I'm a bit nervous but Duane who was also up gave me some encouragement and support.

Meanwhile I found this image at lolcats.com which is one of my favorite sites.

lolcats funny cat pictures

Reminded me of my cat. If I get my legal situation on track somehow, I will definitely buy a white female cat and name her "Snowflake", I think I've mentioned this a few months ago.

Movie Review Fest!

I've spent some of the weekend watching some movies, some I've watched before the weekend but never got to review.

Definitely, Maybe is a 2008 drama/romance/comedy flick that had me from the start. How can a man explain to his young daughter the story of falling in love with her mother, during their divorce? a very tough thing to do. Love is simple and complicated at the same time, and this movie delivers some of it's meaning and complexities. Good acting, a great storyline and a beautiful flow of their character's growth and lives. It's not deep in a spiritual way, but very romantic. I highly recommend this movie.

Next is a trilogy of movies, with mixed reviews.

1997's Starship Troopers is a great sci-fi film, one I consider a must-own for anyone who likes the genre. Actings is not Oscar winning of course, but plenty of good action, special effects and a decent cast and story. I have watched this movie a few times over the years, and it still holds it's water. Aliens attack earth and we strike back with a vengeance. Who can forget "Come on, you apes! You wanna live forever?", yeah, good time. I'm a pacifist, but god I love a good action movie. I always hoped there would be a sequel to it, and unfortunately, there was.

In 2004 someone, somewhere must have seen a ST script and decided "hey, we can make some money with this" and produced it. I'm not saying Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation is an entirely bad film, no. What I'm saying is that even though the original was a blockbuster it wasn't grade A material, more like a very well done B movie with great sfx. This one however, seems to have been done with a tight budget with mostly unknown actors and few locations. The bugs have a team of troopers surrounded in the middle of nowhere while waiting on a rescue extraction. A new bug is introduced which puts the team in danger within an abandoned base. The CGI sfx are decent, but through the movie you can definitely label this as a B movie at best. If you like B movies, renting is ok, buying... not so much.

2008 brought the second sequel, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder with the return of Casper Van Dien in the role of Johnny Rico, the hero of Planet P. That alone made the movie better for some reason, a familiar character which thankfully was not "watered down". Jolene Blalock known from her role in the TV Series Star Trek Enterprise's Vulcan officer is a great addition to the film with a solid role. The story is not half bad to be honest and it certainly had a much larger budget than the previous film. Johnny gets himself sentenced to death by disobeying orders from a superior who is also an old friend. Meanwhile the Sky Marshall is MIA and the higher powers are avoiding a search for him, in what appears to be a power struggle. Can Johnny dodge a hanging and save the Sky Marshall who's going through a strange religious change? Maybe, you'll have to watch to find out. I recommend this movie, a good rent, and an ok buy.

Love in the Time of Cholera is a 2007 drama/romance that features a great cast and a superb story based on a novel. I must warn you this is not a movie for kids, it has very adult topics and scenes. The film captures Colombia's 19th century quite nicely I think. Good acting and beautiful locations bring the story to life but since I never read the novel I'm not sure if it was well adapted. The story spans 50 years of love, sex, passion, obsession and pain. It's hard to describe it. A couple fall in love, but her father takes her away and over time make his daughter forget the vow of love she had with her beloved. She returns years later and when they meet again she turns him down. Broken hearted the now grown man goes through many lovers while still thinking of his beloved and waiting for a time to recapture her love. For some people it may be a shocking film, so even though I recommend this film, be aware you must have an open mind to watch it.

Meet the Spartans... another 2008 movie spoof that not only doesn't deliver, but I swear they should burn the master and every DVD copy out there. Sure there are a handful of times you may chuckle, but that probably comes to a total of 3 minutes of laughter, the other 84 minutes of it, you want to throw a chair at the screen. Avoid it, trust me, run for the hills.

In Bruges is a 2008 drama/comedy of biblical proportions. Two hit men botch a job and are sent to Belgium to keep a low profile. One loves the medieval town, the other can't wait to move on while feeling guilt for killing the wrong person. A call from their boss changes things, leading to an unexpected discovery that one must make a decision to rectify the mistake that landed them in Bruges. Friendship comes to a crossroads, where all choices will lead to bullets, blood and death. I highly recommend this film, a must buy, a great rent. It's Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for god's sake, you know it's good.

2007's Resident Evil 3: Extinction is a mix of good and bad. Special effects, two thumbs up (as in the first 2 films). Storyline? weak, very weak. I loved the RE games back when I had a Playstation, they were great and the first two movies were so-so, but this one really doesn't grab me, even with the nice ending. If you're a sci-fi fan, a decent rent, but it's not something you should consider buying really. Oops, Alice does it again.

Never Back Down is a 2008 movie that a friend of mine recommended to me a few weeks ago. It reminds me a bit of The Karate Kid movie I saw many years ago. Not as inspirational, or good story wise of course. Guy in high school gets embarrassed after a fight with a popular fighter, trains in a gym to let go of his anger, friend gets hurt by the same guy who beat him and... well, you know where it goes from the start. Still it was an enjoyable movie, much more so than most of the Rocky movies. A decent rent, but not so sure about purchasing it.

Jumper is a 2008 sci-fi movie that has a few commonalities with other movies I've reviewed today. Good special effects, but a weak storyline. It was based on a popular novel, but it doesn't really deliver.
Samuel L. Jackson could not be less believable with his white hair, what were they thinking? and Hayden Christiansen was probably the wrong actor to have as lead, but even so the plot is so hollow at times that you want to push the stop button. I watched the whole movie, and I can't recommend it.

Leatherheads is a 2008 sports/comedy with George Clooney and
Renée Zellweger in the early 20th century. Clooney plays as Dodge Connelly, an old professional football player and Zellweger as Lexie Littleton, a nosy reporter. He has managed to save his team from folding by acquiring a former war hero who loves football. The game becomes popular again; but with a mission to find the truth about the young star Zellweger puts not only the team's popularity at risk, but Clooney's career. With a pre-regulation game style, you'll see plenty of cheap and funny moves on the field with only one goal "win at all costs". How will the team react to new rules, possibly losing their star quarterback and the love triangle between Dodge, Lexie and the young war hero? Well, I got to say. Watch it and find out, it's a fun film to see. A good rent, and an ok dvd to buy.

Back to the Future Trilogy well... I watched them again, and I got to say, they are still as good as when I saw them the first time around. A must-have for any science fiction fan, yes buy it! these movies have become classics without a doubt. Well there is something Doc was right about "The time-traveling is just too dangerous. Better that I devote myself to study the other great mystery of the universe: women!".

That's all for today, I think I caught up with all the movies I've seen for the past few weeks. Video Blog probably Monday.

Translating

I've decided to post the translation of "Para Siempre", it's just such a great song that I got to.

"A good love is worth more, than 1000 sack of gold.
A good love is worth more, that is why you're my treasure.

Next to you, I feel worthy and I'm happy with you.
You mean a lot to me, I'm telling you with my heart.

Let us forget the past, and what people may say.
The truth is that I love you, and that you'll love me forever.

Let us forget the past, let's live the present.
What matters is that you love me, and that I'll love you forever.

A great love is worth more, when it grows in forgiveness.
Today I know the tears to strengthen our hearts.

Let us forget the past, and what people may say.
The truth is that I love you, and that you'll love me forever.

Let us forget the past, let's live the present.
What matters is that you love me, and that I'll love you forever."

I will post it also in my other blog, it's the romantic in me, sue me.

The Latino in me

Ok, I will fess up to something pretty big for me. I've been watching a mexican soap opera. There it is, I've fallen for most cliche part of being a latino. The acting is fine, considering that like in every spanish soap opera ever made, everything is a big deal from the color of the curtains which can lead to an assassination of an interior decorator (trust me, this CAN happen) to a married guy cheating on his mistress with his wife. Yeah, that last part is true in another soap opera I've been caught in.

"Al Diablo con los Guapos" which translates to "To Hell with the Handsome (men)" has the cheating husband. But the other one is "Fuego en la Sangre" which translates to "Fire in the Blood". The latter has a very nice theme to it, to the point that I downloaded the MP3.

Here it is.

That's all for today.

PS: The name of the song is "Para Siempre", it means "Forever".

Movie Reviews

Things are going down the drain, can't really write about it, I'll do a video blog when I can. Meanwhile I will do a few movie reviews of stuff I've watched to keep my mind occupied.

Rush Hour 3, the 2007 second sequel to the original is one to avoid. Yes, you see Jackie doing his great stunts, but Tucker couldn't be less entertaining and the plot is weak. I will admit the views of Paris are beautiful, but it doesn't make up for the lack of good characters. Hey, even in action movies you need to have a decent story to go along with the flying kicks and bullets.

Bee Movie is a 2007 animated film that has a decent story for kids, but it will probably bore teens. Seinfeld is actually good in the role of Barry the bee and Renee Zellweger as his human "friend" Vanessa. The animation is very good and allows you to immerse into the story quite easily. It does come with an educational message for kids, the importance of animals in the world and the effect of what they do. A great movie to rent for kids, and even for adults, not if you got teens, pick something else to take home for them.

Cloverfield was this year's extremely hyped movie, with reason. It is hard to explain this film to be honest. A monster movie, a love/drama movie? a horror flick? I don't know, there are so many aspects of the movie that are not only well performed by the actors but the great special effects that come at you slowly through the storyline that is hard to explain it. An unnamed monster hits Manhattan which leads a group of friends to face terrifying things, including the death of people close to them. I don't want to give you anything else because it may spoil it, but this is a must see movie in my opinion. A good rent, and certainly a good one to own on DVD.

27 Dresses; ok there is something personal for me in this film. I've loved seeing Katherine Heigl act since her days in the sci-fi tv series "Rosswell" which unfortunately only lasted 3 seasons. Ok, back to the movie. Romance, a bit of comedy and drama, the usual ingredients to a nice chick flick. I will admit the story is not very strong and has a number of weak parts which could have been either improved or completely re-written, but hey, it is what it is. A good rent, maybe a good DVD purchase if you're a romantic sucker like me. The classic perpetual bride's maid who dreams of her own wedding, with a twist, I will say no more.

Superhero Movie, a 2008... oh why bother. If you see this DVD in your house... step on it, burn it and wrap it in a black plastic bag and deny ever hearing or even knowing the movie exists, trust me, I'm doing you a favor.

Wargames: The Dead Code is the 2008 sequel to 1983's "Wargames" in which Mattew Broderick starred as a young hacker that mistakenly access the department of defense network which leads to a dangerous game between him an the computer. The original was and still is a great film to watch. The sequel cannot compare. Characters who are less than believable (I'm being kind here), a weak plot with more holes than swiss cheese, becomes a cheap B-movie at best, and a complete waste of time overall. Don't rent it, don't watch it, unless you really want to waste 2 hours of your time looking at garbage.

Stargate Continuum is the second 2008 direct-to-DVD release of the beloved Stargate SG-1 franchise. This time around, there will be time traveling (yes that was a pun, forgive me). I believe this was the last performance of Don S. Davis as Lieutenant General George Hammond before he passed away, and he will be sorely missed. The following is from the wikipedia entry for the film. "
While SG-1 attends a Tok'ra extraction ceremony for Ba'al, the last of the Goa'uld System Lords, Teal'c and Vala inexplicably disappear into thin air. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell race back to a world where history has been changed: the Stargate program has been erased from the timeline. As they try to convince the authorities what's happened, hundreds of Goa'uld motherships arrive in orbit, led by Ba'al, his queen Qetesh (Vala), and his first prime, Teal'c. The remaining SG-1 members must find the Stargate and set things right before the world is enslaved by the Goa'uld." I saw a screener of it, and it was superb, good special effects, a solid story and of course great acting, what else is expected? a must buy for any science fiction or SG-1 fan, and even if you're not, a great rent.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a charming 2008 fantasy film for all ages. Based on a bestselling series of books, this movie delivers a good story, solid characters and soft toned special effects in which you will see fantastic creatures who are like chameleons hiding in nature. Well, it all starts with a family that has inherited an old house from a distance relative. Mother, daugher and twin sons (which are spectacularly played by the same young actor). One of the twin is resentful at the fact his parents seem to be separated and heading for a divorce. He dislikes the house (to put it midly) and accidentally finds a magical book with secrets written by his ancestor who opens a world of fantasy and danger. A battle for the book ensues between the family and an evil ogre and his minions, where the kids have to learn how to create and use magic to defend themselves and their mother. Certainly a good rental, and I suggest you add it to your DVD buying list if you like fantasy.

Zombie Strippers is a 2008 fun to watch comedy/horror movie. Ok, the title gives away the plot but with Jenna Jameson as a stripper and Robert Englund (famous for his Freddy Krueger character) as the owner of the joint you won't get too bored. This is definitely a b-movie, with somewhat decent special effects (even though some are obviously low budget) and plenty of nudity. It's without a doubt targeted at men who like cheap horror flicks and female nudity, in other words at a large percentage of us out there. A fun rental if you're with a bunch of your male friends bored one friday or saturday night. Don't buy it, unless it's meant to be a gag gift for a friend. Fun to watch, bad to own.

Tomorrow I may do a video blog.

Loss to the Sci Fi world

Ok, I was going to write a recap of what's been going on with me, but today I found out that a great actor has passed away.

Don S. Davis is no longer among us. He was one of my favorite actors. He had a medical condition related to his heart troubles which limited his work.

I don't know what to say, except may he be in a better place than we are.

Donate for Don at the American Heart Association

I'll do a video blog later today.

No video blog

Sorry guys, as the title says, no video blog today. Things have gotten complicated here. Let's see if I can fill you in.

In my last video blog you saw me after an interview to work in a warehouse. That was an interesting week. The second day of me working there (Wednesday) I got hurt. The roof was being redone, and all that we were told was that some dust may come down from the ceiling. We started to work on moving merchandise out of the way of the falling dust. Without warning hot tar was coming down. Some landed on my right hand, my shirt and my pants.

I wasn't seriously hurt, but enough to negotiate a $100 compensation to replace my clothes. Because of my current legal status I did not want to risk going to court or taking legal action. I signed a waver after getting the money the following Monday from the roofing company.

Before that I found out Friday that the company doesn't pay straight cash, which meant I would have to be on the books and I can't do that right now. The owner understood and paid me in cash and put me down as a temp. He did mention that during November and December they hire seasonal staff and do pay in cash and that he would be happy to see me again.

I'm a good worker, but right now I need straight cash.

Ray hooked me and Duane up this past Monday with an inventory job with his company. Duane got the hang of it quick. Maritza seems to be coming down with a cold and I was concerned for her, I got her some medicine (Nyquil).

Monday night Duane and Ray had a misunderstanding which I helped resolve, and I saw signs of drinking. I talked to him about it Wednesday afternoon and he agreed he needed to slow down.

I'm not working right now, but I've been managing to hustle a bit with the stuff I got dumpster diving which I put up on craigslist.

I planned ahead and bought food which can last me for weeks to save on having to eat out. I won't go hungry that's for sure and with Martiza cooking every few days that should balance things out.

Every bit of cash I manage to earn goes into my bank account and I'm paid up with rent until August 20th. Two months should be enough to find a stable job I hope. I've done what I can for Maritza and Ray financially, I've reached my limit. I can now only give moral support.

I can only hope that Duane stays sober, his anger issues seem to be more of a problem as times goes on. He has a grudge against the world, from gas prices to jewish people. His view of his surroundings are not clear I think. You can't take things personal and be furious at every thing which you have no control over, specially other people and their choices. I'm trying to help him, but I don't know if it makes a difference at this point.

I've been feeling a bit down in the past 2 weeks, wondering what future I could have if I can't resolve my legal problems. I want to find a good woman to love, have children, a family... a future. How can I make it happen if I can't work on the books, pay my taxes, get a driver's license or even get on an airplane to go anywhere?

I'm not giving up, but it's tough emotionally right now. I can't tell Maritza or Ray about it, I don't know them well enough right now. Duane knows the situation but right now I'm the one helping him, he's in no position to help me and he already gets mad about it when I do rarely mention it.

I've been playing Travian to occupy my mind, and posted once again in my other blog to let my emotions out, it helps a lot to share that part of me.

There are so many aspects of me. The sci-fi/fantasy geek, the computer nerd a.k.a gamer, the romantic, the movie and music lover, the quiet reader, the nature lover, the cook (I'm no chef, but with a good recipe and the right ingredients I'm good to go!), the pacifist, the blogger (heh), the organizer, the translator (even though my Spanish is rusty), the cat & dog lover (I miss my cat still), and so much more. There are days when I realize "oh yeah, I like that too!" and remember a part of me which has been dormant.

I try to enjoy every day, looking at the sky on clear days whenever I can. But still, inside I'm not always alright. I'm 38 and I got no family to call my own. Time stops for no man.

I don't mind being alone, but to remain in such a state is not what I want. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

May as well do a movie review since i saw it tonight.

Benny & Joon is a 1993 comedy/romance/drama with one of my favorite actors, Johnny Depp. A brother and his mentally ill sister (Benny and Joon) live together in a small town. While struggling to decide if to send her away on her doctor's recommendation the brother's love life sparkles. During a poker night with the guys the sister loses a hand and they end up stuck with Sam (Depp) who awakens new feelings in Joon. I'll say no more. I recommend this movie.

That's all for today.

Another Video Blog

Sorry guys, forgot that I had left this post as a draft and didn't post it!

Ok, here is the movie review I promised.

Fanaa is a 2006 Indian movie with Hindi subtitles. The movie will draw you in, and as any typical Indian movie singing and dancing are involved of course. If you've seen Indian movies before and like them then this one will be a gem of a film for you. Good acting, a great (an unexpected) story of love, loss, deceit and murder!

Zooni, a young blind girl visits Delhi as part of a national holiday and meets a tour guide who is a known Casanova. His flirtations charms her and she falls in love with him. What she doesn't know is that Rehan lives a secret and dangerous life. A terrorist bomb kills Rehan, which leads Zooni to a life of mourning and guilt. This movie, is a must watch for anyone who likes international films.

Video blog!

Ok, video blog time!

I've been selling some stuff on craiglist. So, where does Luis get stuff to sell when he is broke?

Answer: Urban Foraging.... a.k.a. Dumpster Diving. It sounds bad, unless you get a Sean John Watch, a Logitech USB Headset, Books, Ray Ban Sunglasses, Video Games, Clothing, Photo Frames, 2008 Calendars, etc. All either in mint or good shape to use or sell.

I check Marshalls, Leohmans, Walgreens and other stores dumpsters. I don't jump into nasty smelly ones, these big stores keep their garbage pretty well bagged and you can tell which are garbage bin bags and which are "store garbage" which can be unsold or slightly defective stuff. It's a long shot, maybe once a week I hit jackpot with useful things. And that is how I've been making a few bucks while I wasn't working for almost 4 weeks.

It's sorta funny that when I was homeless I never did that, but when I found a place to live I sorta got into it by accident. I saw something near a dumpster which looked good a few weeks ago, and have been doing it ever since.

Ok, let's move on to the movie reviews. Oh yes, about the Madonna video I posted earlier today, I just liked it after watching it on MTV so I figured to share it.

Elizabethtown is a 2005 Drama/Comedy/Romance that starts with a very weak story about a sneaker designer who fails miserably and delays his end by dealing with his father's death. Things were pretty boring until... Kristen Dunst's character appeared. From that point on the move slowly picks up and goes from bring a bad film, to being an ok film. I can't recommend it since it's not worth watching until about 1/3 into the movie, however if you got time to kill with a female and want to watch the comedy/romance part of it (which succeeds in the end) then consider renting it.

The Forbidden Kingdom is a 2008 action/fantasy film with two of my favorite action stars: Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Based on a classic Chinese novel ("Journey to the West") the movie starts in Boston with a teen (Jason) who loves kung-fu movies that is bullied by other kids. This reminds me of the old Karate Kid movie which was good by the way (I'm not counting the sequels to it). Back on track... the kid buys martial arts dvd's from a store run by an old Chinese man (Chan) who has a mysterious ancient golden staff in the back of his place. It all goes wrong when the group of bullies forces Jason to help them break into the store at night. The kid ends up being transported back to ancient china where others recognize him as "The Seeker", part of an old prophecy. Usually I don't go into this much detail about the start of a movie... but I want you to get a good idea of the beginning because this is a great family movie. I highly recommend it, if you want to know more about the film... go see it!

That is all for today guys.

Ok, who doesn't like Madonna?

No work, Pool Party and Travian?

Well there are a lot of things going on, and mostly bad, for me.

John didn't come back last Monday and stayed another week with his daughter. Which meant, no money. I can't stand by Home Depot holding a sign, because if Ray or Maritza see me doing it, they may freak out and ask me to leave. Sure the chances of that is low, but would you rent a room to someone holding a "Looking for Work" sign? I ain't taking that chance.

Today I sent him a text message, no answer. He owes me pay for 2 days work. I'm a bit worried.

Der seems to be staying in Florida, but he tells me that once I get my driver's license I can work for him again... uh, I can't and he knows it. So that door seems to be closing, yet I call him on occasion to keep in touch so he knows I really want to work for him again.

With all these things not working out currently, my bank account is going down like a hooker that spots a $100 bill on the street.

I switched to Metro PCS, no more worries about minutes or people hearing me say "yeahoktalktoyoulater" to save minutes.

Meanwhile I'm trying to help Ray and Martiza sell stuff on craigslist (and sell some stuff myself). Little luck.

So my plan which I can't reveal fully in this blog because it may incriminate me, is to get a regular job on the books. Yes, technically it shouldn't be possible, however, it's a matter of numbers if you know what I mean.

Coincidentally, I will be buying a printer/scanner. All I need is to get a stable job for a few months so I can get a divorce and then try to rebuild myself legally (somehow) so I can stay in the country I now call home. Hell I've been here 20 years, there has to be a way for me to be here legitimately after all this time.

Ok, so Ray and Maritza had another Pool party last Sunday. I socialized a bit, but I got to say that it was extremely difficult to relate to the people who were there. All Latinos, speaking Spanish and I just could not fit in. Spanish music, no problem. But the conversation were just about things which I could not understand. I tried to get it, and couldn't. Most of the time I've been in the states I rarely dealt with Latinos.

This is frustrating and embarrassing for me on a personal level, that I, a Peruvian can't fit in with a group of southamericans!

My plan to eventually hook up with a Latina seems to be out the window.

All that aside. I'm still playing Travian and now I play PKR more often which is a virtual 3D multiplayer poker game that I played for free before I left my wife. Playing Poker Texas Hold 'em. Those who want to join me in Travian, sorry but Server 6 is full and that is the one I play in, you can catch me in PKR as "Windguaerd".

I'm trying to stay positive and get my new plan in effect, if all goes well within a week I should be filling applications at a few places.

If anyone has any decent spare parts to build a PC so I can rejoin my friends in LOTRO, let me know.

That's all for today.

Helping friends, home made food and... swimming? oh noes!

I helped Ray and Maritza by running their garage sale, thanks to the signs which Duayne bought we got people to notice us more and made them a bit over $50. They really need the money, and I was happy to help. What else was I doing between 9AM-2PM? I would've been watching tv or online doing nothing anyways, may as well help those in need.

The surprise was that they grilled and me and Duayne got home made food again! You'll see in the video.

Ok, as some of you know I don't know how to swim. Yes, I was brought up in the peruvian coast, and I've been in Florida for 8 years. However I only been to the beach twice in the years I'm here so I didn't see a need for it. Now with a pool in the backyard, today I decided to face my fear of drowning and learn how to swim. With some tips from Ray and Duayne (and Maritza laughing her ass off when she found out I didn't know how to swim) I've begun my self-taught lessons.

Good thing Ray had a spare set of goggles, 'cause me having my eyes open underwater is not the first thing I want to experience.

Here are the videos, no movie reviews today guys, I've been busy selling junk, eating good food and trying not to drown.

That's all for today.

Busy Week

Well, it's been a busy week. Even though John is away out of state and I didn't work this week, a lot has happened.

Ok, the big news first...may as well show you.

Dar sold me his scooter as he promised. I got registration and tag all done this week, its legally mine. It cost me half my savings altogether with expenses but it's worth it. The helmet was a bit messed up (visor was loose) but I went to home depot and got a piece to fix it. $8 for a full tank of gas, not bad. It's a 2003 Malaguti (Italian) Phantom, not sure how many cc but I registered as a Moped since the original registration showed it as such, and also because if it was registered as a scooter I'd need a Motorcycle License and right now I can't get one. I'll be investing in a tune up next week to make sure I keep it in good shape.

Now the bad news is that Dar is getting a divorce, and his wife is a legal partner in the limo business. He wants her to be a silent partner and keep the business going, but if she doesn't agree (which she is likely to do) then he will dissolve the company and move to New York. That would pretty much mean the end of my employment with him.

It's sad because Dar is a very level headed man, and his wife screamed at him and their kids a lot. Reminded me of Nina. So far all evidence I've seen and experienced shows that Jewish women may not be suitable for a normal loving marriage.

Ok, with that aside. I helped Ray and Maritza set up their garage sale early sat (I was up at 7AM and ran it until 2PM). It wasn't a success mainly because they didn't buy Garage Sale signs to put out on the streets to guide cars in. Later today (Sunday) we'll make another run at it and hopefully things will pick up.

Monday and Friday I met Bill & Joan for the free food they gave out. I gave them some clothes Monday and about 40 bags of potato chips Friday since Duayne found them as he was looking for empty boxes for the garage sale.

Here are some photos of them, they are the nicest couple. They used to be homeless themselves a few years ago, which is why they now help those who live on the streets. They know me and Duayne are trying to get back on our feet so they give us a hand still.

I was planning on going with them to church Sunday, but the garage sale got in the way and I had promised Maritza to help them out.

My laptop now can play Anarchy Online, problem is that it doesn't have the numeric pad on the right side of course and that is what I used to play AO for years moving my characters. A wireless keyboard would fix that problem, but not a priority. I can now play with my AO friends again.

Acheron from TDH (The Dark Hunters, my LOTRO guild) got me hooked on Travian, a web based strategy game. I curse the day he told me about it, I'm hooked!

I tried everything to try and get LOTRO to run on the laptop, but it's not possible, it doesn't work. Solution: buy a used desktop, low on my priorities list right now as well.

I helped my friend Eric move to his new place, he is so thin and weak that he could barely pick up an empty short file cabinet, I ain't kidding. I practically did the entire move for him. I even got him a free handtruck so we could move his furniture (borrowed from Maritza).

Earlier in the week he surprised me and gave me a 20" TV, which I now enjoy in my room, and after the move he gave me a nice wall mirror and a wooden wall clock.

I'm decorating my room with stuff I'm getting for free from friends or that I find. It's funny that I have a better looking room now than when I was with my wife, heh.

Ok, on to the movie reviews!

Let's start with a romantic, erotic comedy. Virgin Territory is a 2007 movie in which the main character played by Hayden Christensen (a.k.a. Anakin Skywalker) is an Italian Casanova who upsets a very rich and powerful noble which forces him to flee to avoid certain death. Through plain luck (and the unfortunate death of a grounds keeper) he finds refuge in a convent while pretending to be deaf and dumb. This leads to... interesting times. Ok, I will stop there. The movie is fun to watch, it's no great romance by any means, but it's very entertaining for sure. I recommend this movie.

Next is 2006's The Prestige which I thought it would be similar to The Illusionist which I previously reviewed since both films are about magicians. I was very much mistaken. Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are great as rivals and the extremes to which each take to surpass each other may surprise you. It all starts with an accident in which Robert (Jackman) loses his wife and suspects it's Alfred's fault (Bale). The story spans years in the careers of the magicians, with a great ending. I highly recommend this film.

One Missed Call is a 2008 horror/thriller based on the original Japanese film. The premise is simple, yet creepy. People are starting to get phone calls of themselves from the future right before they die. Imagine you get a call, and hear yourself die with the phone displaying the date and time. Scary, yeah. That alone may get you to check it out, I usualy avoid horror movies, but this was a pleasant surprise. It was enjoyable and it gave me chills more than once. I recommend this movie.

That's all for today.

What a weekend!

Ok, here we go. Saturday morning Eric calls me to give me a free 20" TV which actually works. I had promised to help him move and he was going to do that today.

Back to Saturday. I stayed home and decided to take a nap by the pool. Bad idea, it was so hot I had no choice but go into the pool. I went in up to my shoulders and practiced kicking as Duayne had advised me to do so I could learn how to swim. I actually recorded this but not sure how it came out. Expect a video in this post.

I will be making a special video with a message to all my TDH and AO peeps soon =D

I'm a Marvel fan, so Iron Man was a must. I didn't go to the theater but I saw it, you can guess how I saw it. I will write a review for the movie tomorrow.

I helped Ray set up the tents for the Mother's Day pool party that is taking place right now.. which is very loud and I'm invited so I will go and try to mingle a little. It's been years since I've been at a party, I feel a bit insecure about socializing this way, but I know once Ray introduces me I will bring out my charming smile out and see if I can make a good impression on his friends and family.

Well, that's all for today.

OMG I look nice!

Well today my plan was to try and think of ways to make money through Ebay somehow. But then Dar calls me in the morning to work in the afternoon. Yes, limo time!

Thanks to thrift shops and some free clothes from Bill & Joan I have a half decent wardrobe for work.

Here are some pics and a video of me working today. We picked up 3 nice Germans guys from the Miami Airport. The last few are of the Hooters Der took me to after work. It's good to be me today, yup.

Der tells me I'll be working Saturday and Sunday. He's pretty much agreed to sell me his scooter for whatever it cost him to ship it from NY to FL when he moved down here. With it I can be more mobile and do more things to earn money I think. It will cost me a few hundred bucks and a nice hit to my savings but worth the investment.

Ok, on to a movie review!

L' Enfant is a 2006 French drama that may shock you a bit. Bruno is a small time thief who has just become a father and has no aspirations to get a real job. Sonia, his young girlfriend is deeply in love with him and ignores his shortcomings, until Bruno sells their son (Jimmy) for cash. Sonia faints and ends up in the hospital while Bruno slowly realizes the great mistake he's made. He'll have to face tough guys and end up in great debt to recover little Jimmy. His struggle to get money to get out of debt leads him to a robbery that puts a young accomplice in cold water. The actors playing Bruno and Sonia are excellent and so believable combined with the way the way the film is shot makes this a movie that I can highly recommend to anyone.

That's all for today.

No luck today

Finding Neverland is a 2004 movie about the author (James M. Barrie) of the popular play Peter Pan. I got to say that this is one of the finest and most touching performances by Johnny Depp and some of the younger actors. It's funny that Dustin Hoffman is in the movie since he once was in the role of Hook back in the 1991 movie of the same name. To say the story is well done and acted is an understatement. I highly recommend this movie.

I told Dar about what happened at the DMV, he wasn't happy but now wants to help me get a driver's license but also wants me to move into a warehouse to watch his property/cars and Im not sure I want to do that after moving into a nice place.

That is all for today.

Super-sized Recap!

I got my camera back so let's start with pictures from the apartment me and John worked and a video tour of our work.

Last Saturday I went to a few garage sales, with no luck but... there was some nice scenery I could not ignore. So more pics and videos!

Sunday I spent the morning helping Duane find a TV on sale (videos explains further) and part of the day hanging out by the pool. Duane cleaned the pool since he used to have a pool cleaning business and knew how to do it properly. Later in the afternoon my friend Eric came by to visit and did him a favor regarding a sign he made to win a Kelly Clarkson contest (which he lost 'cause he got there late, yet still got concert tickets). By the way, Eric is camera shy.

Ok that's all for now. Tomorrow I'll put up with some new movie reviews.
